Backyard Drama

This morning Deenesh’s eye was caught by what he thought was a squirrel falling out of a tree.

On closer look it was actually a squirrel flinging himself onto the back of an owl, trying to protect his (the squirrel’s) nest.

The owl spent most of the morning snoozing in nearby trees.

And then it returned in the afternoon.

I saw a motion in the corner of my eye, and caught it just in time to see the same thing happen – the squirrel flinging itself at the owl.

Then Deenesh and I watched as it happened a third time.

It’s like having the Discovery channel in our backyard.

My mom suggested that the owl may be one of the juveniles from the nesting pair nearby, and that it is now looking for its own nest, and is trying to steal the squirrel’s nest for that purpose.

Now that darkness has fallen, who knows what kind of battles are being fought out there, but I do not envy that squirrel.

Asher, watching the owl from the window while holding his own owl in his arms.
Guess which owl he showed Nana first when she came over?
