Can Asher walk? Yes.
Can he stand unassisted confidently? Yes
Can he walk for long distances? Yes, up to about 22 steps at a time.
Can he do it consistently? Yes. (well, 5-10 steps consistently)
Can he do it indefinitely? Not really.
After all, crawling is still faster if it's longer distances, and you can always walk on your knees if you need your hands free. So really, what's the point?
So is he a walker? We'll let you judge for yourself.

I do it
Asher can't talk much yet, but he is already asserting "I do it"
While our friends Sandra and Justin nearly broke their backs with how much Julia wanted to practice walking (not that she needs help any more) Asher refuses to get help with walking. He likes to push the stroller, even though he can't do it in a straight line, and he objects if we try to touch the stroller (we finally figured out to pull his sippy cup since it has a ribbon attaching it to the stroller). He doesn't like help using a spoon even though he still tries to use the back end to try to feed himself.
And when we try to help, he just lifts our hand and removes it for us.

He's a boy's boy
On Thursday Asher was really struggling to get his big blue truck and himself up onto the couch. He was really working on it, he would get it up there, and then start to climb up, but then the truck would fall down, so he would have to get down and retrieve it. It was really quite the endeavor.
I looked at Deenesh and I said "what is he doing?"
Deenesh nodded knowingly. "He's gonna throw the truck down."
Sure enough. Asher finally made it up there with the truck. He stood up on the couch, lifted the truck up over his head and dropped it down.
Then he looked at me and said "Uh-oh"

Sno-to-Go
Gobi on the floor
When Asher is really resisting going to sleep he has a tendency to throw Gobi out of the crib.
I don’t know why he does this. Perhaps it is because that is where he wants to be and so he throws Gobi out thinking that he will then follow. Perhaps he thinks it is because he knows someone will have to rescue Gobi so he knows it will make us return. Perhaps he figures that he can’t go to sleep without Gobi so if he throws him out it will help him resist falling asleep.
Whatever the reason though he throws Gobi out.
But then he becomes distraught.
Because Gobi is no longer in the crib.
So he screams his head off.
When we finally return he points at Gobi on the floor and he tells us all about it. I imagine he is saying something along the lines of “Gobi is on the floor and he is not supposed to be on the floor and I don’t want him on the floor and Gobi should be in the crib with me and you should tell him that he should not be on the floor and please please please pick him up because I need him right now and he should not be on the floor”
Somehow, I just get the feeling that he leaves out the part where he was the one that threw Gobi on the floor.

The love of a one-year-old
This morning: As representative of a typical morning in the Sohoni household.
Asher woke up and we went into the living room. He saw his most beloved of all creatures – Spinx. He crawled full steam ahead shrieking with pure love and delight, interspersed with yells of "Ca" "Ca". I remove Asher to the coffee table and distract him while I go get his book so that he can point to the cat in the book. When I return Asher is chasing Spinx with his drumstick. I confiscate the drum stick. Asher grabs a ball and throws it at Spinx trying to get Spinx to play catch with him. He throws two before I can stop him. All of this is motivated by the sheer exhilaration of his love of Spinx.
We haven’t told Asher that Spinx doesn’t love him yet.
We haven’t told Spinx yet that Asher is going to learn how to walk.

Road Trip 2009: Asher loves basketball
Carol and Rick have a basketball hoop on their garage. Asher gets so intent whenever he sees a hoop, that even an invisible basketball suffices.
Asher also got to play doorway basketball in Missouri. His three Bergman cousins were there to keep handing him the ball, unfortunately they weren't quite big enough to lift him up to the hoop just yet, so mom and dad got good workouts lifting him up and down for the dunks.

Road Trip 2009: Asher give two thumbs up to frozen custard!
St. Louis! We spent the night with Tracy's friend from college, Carol, her husband Rick, and their dog Barley. (Asher loves dogs!) We went to an incredibly tasty vegetarian restaurant and then followed it up with a St. Louis establishment - Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. It was Asher's first experience with ice cream. He approved.

Flashback Photos
If Asher doesn't want to be held...
Deenesh and I were both sitting here working on the blog. Asher was playing with the blinds.
At around the same time Deenesh and I both realized Asher had been quiet for about 30 seconds.
That is enough time for a 1 year old to find a container of cookies, pull it off a shelf, pry open the lid, and start shoving them in his mouth. (He's never had these cookies before, so how he knew what they were and what to do - just pure baby instinct. Actually, come to think of it, he'd never had cookies before this, unless you count the roughly 12,000 girl scout cookies I ate while pregnant)

Communication Studies 101
Asher has started to develop his vocabulary (using a more lenient definition of utterances):
Ba= Ball (first word)
Ca= Cat (pointing to a cat in a store window and today at a cat in a book)
Spinx, however, is not a cat
Boh= Book
(he also says Dada and mama- but we are not convinced they refer to us)
He also understands the following:
where's Gobi - which elicts a search for his green girafe
wave- a new and long awaited one
blow kisses- okay, he just smacks his mouth with his hand
and best of all:
whenever he drinks something, especially my smoothies, he lets out a nich ahhhhhh!!!
(it really is that long)
Wheaton Botanical Gardens
The butterfly exhibit at the Wheaton Botanical Gardens was fantastic. Asher even deigned to allow me to hold his hands to assist him in walking so that he could have a better view than crawling.
Asher was supposed to sit in front of the flowers so I could get a picture of him and the butterfly behind him. He was NOT cooperating. He wanted to crawl over to me, he wanted to grab the camera, he wanted to crawl off to see some other flowers. A few people noticed and started chuckling at his antics until a woman took pity on me and offered to take a picture of the both of us.

Mama! Looook at what I found. Can I keep it?

Juggling
Asher loves it when Daddy juggles for him. And when a ball drop he scoops it up, hands it back to Deenesh and watches with anticipation for Deenesh to start juggling again.
But if Deenesh drops two balls, Asher scoops one up, hands it to Deenesh, and watches with anticipation for Deenesh to start juggling again. He misses the concept of giving back both balls.
But it's not his fault, apparently dogs are better at math than babies.
